This list is mostly for myself, but I wanted to share my favourite movies and music from 2024:
New Movies
Love Lies Bleeding - Such a cool and stylized neo-noir. I loved the surreal turn in the third act. There's also a shot of a broken egg in cigarette ash, and for some reason, it lives rent-free in my head. This movie also made me go back to weight-lifting.
The Substance - This movie excites me about the prospect of a new wave of bombastic body horror movies. The colours, set design and the third act, really just worked for me, even though the themes felt a little too heavy-handed at times. Monstro Elisasue forever! Also the grossest scene for me was Dennis Quaid eating shrimp, ugh!
Anora - Every Sean Baker movie that I see completely sucks me in, and this was no exception. Just like his other movies, there's such a romance to the way he shoots environments and moods that I have no choice but to be an even bigger stan. Shout out to the goons.
A Different Man - Sebastian Stan is such a little worm of a man in this film and Renate Reinsve is still the worst person in the world somehow.
Kinds of Kindness - I loved the three different explorations of what lengths people will go for love and devotion, even if it means devasting consequences. Yorgos is a weirdo.
New to Me Movies
400 Blows - This has long been on my list, and I was thrilled to see it on the big screen at the Revue. It really sucks being a kid, doesn't it?
Serial Mom - I actually saw this twice this year, once at the Paradise in the Spring and then again at Revue in the Fall. Kathleen Turner should've won an Oscar for this unhinged role of a lifetime, like are you kidding me?!
Chunking Express - I know that In the Mood for Love is everyone's fave (mine too!), but the energy and humour of Chunking Express was more my style and left me so delighted.
Sick of Myself - I don't know what's in the water in Norway but I've been really enjoying their film outputs. I feel like I knew people like Signe at OCAD.
Dogfight - This movie is so sweet and earnest that it's almost too much at times, but I haven't stopped thinking about it since I saw it in the summer.
Albums
Amyl and the Sniffers / Cartoon Darkness - I love Amy Taylor and the dark humour on this album. If I had 1% of her confidence and fuck-you attitude I think I would be unstoppable.
Kendrick Lamar / GNX - I mean, come on! I, too, went to therapy and started setting boundaries and calling people out.
Dehd / Poetry - Still super catchy and fun, but deeper this time around. It feels like they worked through some stuff.
Doechii / Alligator Bites Never Heal - So excited to see where she's going to go and what she's going to do. She feels like a fully formed artist with such a cool and specific point of view.
Songs
Christopher Owens - I think about heaven
Amyl and the Sniffers - You should not be doing that
Fred again - Places to be be
Charlie XCX/Lorde - Girl so confusing
Kendrick Lamar - Not like us
Faye Webster/Lil Yachty - Lego Ring
